Although these statistics are alarming, there are a number of treatment options available for those that are diagnosed with breast cancer. The best way to treat any disease is to prevent it.

Currently, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women and one of the chief causes of death worldwide. (Oeffinger,Fontham, Etzioni, et al.) According to the American Cancer Society 2015, it is the leading contributor to cancer mortality in women aged 40 to 55. Several risk factors increase the likelihood of the disease occurring.

Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women (Up to Date, 2014). The associated risk can be as high as 12% for every woman in the United States, regardless of family history (American Cancer Society, 2013).

Breast cancer is currently the second most common cancer (behind skin cancer): there are more than 3.5 million American women currently living with breast cancer. There is a 252.7 thousand invasive-cancer case rate, a 63.4 thousand abnormal-cell case rate, and a 40.6 thousand individual-mortality rate (World Health Organization, 2016).

Age is another risk because as a person gets older their risk increases. Race and ethnicity is another risk factor; white women are more at risk for breast cancer than African American women. Only “about 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, resulting directly from gene defects inherited from a parent” (cancer.org).
